Missouri Special Session Update
|
The Missouri General Assembly returned to Jefferson City this week for its second special session this year. Governor Kehoe called for the special session to address congressional redistricting and initiative petition reform.
The House of Representatives passed both measures on Tuesday. The redistricting bill passed 90-65, and the initiative petition reform legislation passed 98-58.
The Missouri Senate convened Wednesday with thousands of protestors in the capitol building and on the lawn. Shortly after roll call, Senate Republicans adopted a change to the Senate rules. Under the new rules, dealing with House bills became the first order of business, which did not go over well with Senate Democrats. They adjourned Wednesday afternoon with no movement on either measure.
The Senate was back in session shortly after 9:00 a.m. today. Senator Beck was speaking about September 11, with today being 24 years since the attacks, when a “point of order” was called and things spiraled from there. They stand at recess until 2:30 p.m. today. As of 3:30 p.m. today, session has not started, so stay tuned. More updates in next week's newsletter.
